The Republic of Maldives announced its plans of going carbon neutral by 2020. With its entire nation threatened by the effects of climate change, Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed said that the government will allocate $1.1 Billion in the coming ten year period for special projects dedicated to finding alternative sources of energy.

Maldives Climate Change

Maldives is considered one of the nations most threatened by climate change. By 2100, sea level is expected to rise by 3.3 feet, faster than initially predicted. Because of this, the next couple of years in Maldives governance will see immediate response for neutralizing carbon usage by investing on solar roof panels, wind turbines, and a biomass-burning power plant. Maldives President Nasheed says that going green might cost a lot but refusing to do so will cause the earth to unleash its wrath.

Maldives will be the first carbon-neutral country in the world if it successfully executes its plans for 2020. However, a tiny nation such as the Maldives will only reduce 0.1 percent of carbon emissions of the earth once all these plans are completed. On a more positive note, this endeavor may symbolize a global advocacy targeted for climate-polluting nations. In this way, the Republic of Maldives is a symbolic representation of the earth’s preservation.

Eco-tourism in Maldives

The islands of Maldives is known as a tourist destination wherein eco-tourism is given emphasis. Billions of dollars may be spend on green projects, but the preservation of this earthly paradise starts with the individual. Maldives implement strict policies on protecting its sensitive environment and abundant marine life.
