It all started during the 1970s when surf travelers Tony Hussein-Hinde and Mark Scanlon were shipwrecked on their way to somewhere else. Maldives surfing season is pretty much similar to that of Indonesia. The months of March to October are ideal periods to surf Maldives. The biggest waves to be ridden while surfing in Maldives can be caught during the months of July and August.

Most of the Maldives surfing breaks are reef breaks, which can be very smooth or totally extreme. The average height of waves is usually 4 to 8 feet and can grow more than 10 feet during the peak season of Maldives surfing. Maldives is home to the O’Neill Deep Blue Surfing Tournament. This internationally acclaimed event is participated by professional surfers from across the globe, and frequented by thousands of surfing enthusiasts and audiences. At present, surfing in Maldives is gaining worldwide recognition.
