Tourism in the Maldives turned 25 on 1997. For some, it feels like only yesterday since the first group of tourists in Maldives arrived in 1972. Today, tourism in Maldives has flourished into a strong global industry, with approximately 600,000 visitors every year. At present date, there are already more than 10 recipients of the President of Maldives Green Award for tourism which was launched in 1997 to commemorate the silver anniversary of Maldives tourism.
The President of Maldives Green Award for tourism is an incentive given to resort establishments, with the purpose and criteria of promoting environmental protection for the fragile and tiny islands of Maldives. It is a symbol of great importance to the sustainable development of the tourism industry in Maldives. The President of Maldives Green Award is the most prestigious award for Maldives tourism establishments among the many environmental awards given by the government.

Maldives Tourism for a Clean and Green Environment

The economy of Maldives highly depends on its tourism industry, which is probably the largest industry in the country. One of the selling points of tourism in Maldives is an industry dedicated to implementing green policies for the betterment of the environment. A country that’s prone to the effects of climate change, Maldives serves as a great role model for promoting environmental protection.
