The Black Finned Anenome Fish, more formally known as Amphiprion Nigripes, is a Clown Fish of the genus Amphiprion. The Black Finned Anenome Fish is Maldives’ very own, meaning that it is not found in any other part of the world except for neighboring Sri Lanka.

Anenome Fish of the Maldives

Anemone fish are specialized damsel fish that have adapted to living in a symbiotic relationship with anemones. Anenome Fish are rarely spotted very far away from their host. from their host. There are about 30 species of Anenome Fish, all (except one) in the genus Amphiprion, of which three are found in the Maldives.

The Black Finned Anemone Fish can be found in the Western Indian Ocean, playful swimming amongst the sot coral of the Maldivian atolls and Sri Lanka. The Black Finned Anemone Fish often associated with the sea anemone, and typically lives in small groups. TBlack Finned Anemone Fish can be found in most reefs while scuba diving in the Maldives, normally at reef crests and slopes to a depth of about 15 meters.

Anenome Fish

Anenome Fish can be found throughout most of the Indo-Pacific region, hanging around the 1000+ species of anenome. The anemone doesn’t sting the fish as it recognizes it as being part of itself.

Clownfish and certain damselfish are the only species of fishes that can avoid the potent poison of a sea anemone. There are several theories about how this is accomplished:

-The mucus coating of the fish may be based on sugars rather than proteins. This would mean that anemones fail to recognize the fish as a potential food source and do not fire their nematocysts, or sting organelles.

-The coevolution of certain species of clownfish with specific anemone host species and may have acquired an immunity to the nematocysts and toxins of their host anemone. Experimentation has shown that Amphiprion percula may develop resistance to the toxin from Heteractis magnifica, but it is not totally protected, since it was shown experimentally to die when its skin, devoid of mucus, was exposed to the nematocysts of its host.

This clownfish is characterized by its rusty, orange color with a single white stripe running vertically just behind the eye. It can attain a maximum length of 4.3in. (11cm).
