Info on Gay Travel To Costa Rica

Gays And Lesbians
There is alot of gays in Costa Rica, Lesbians in Costa Rica are not frequently seen, travel for gays in Costa Rica should not be a problem. There are many gay bars in Costa Rica, gay restaurants in Costa Rica, gay discos in Costa Rica, and gay hotels in Costa Rica, there is also a popular nude beach in Costa Rica.

San José has been described as a "very actively gay city" and is well known for its busy, if relatively underground, gay scene. Costa Rica seems to be tolerant of homosexuality and has laws to protect gays from discrimination. Although Costa Rica is nominally a Roman Catholic nation, homosexual intercourse is legal (the consensual age is 17; for heterosexuals it's 15). However, the Costa Rican government is zealous in protecting minors, and as the age of majority is 18, gay travelers are advised against fraternizing with anyone under that age.

Despite legal protection, discrimination clearly exists, and the general feeling is that Costa Rican gays (particularly lesbians) remain, for the most part, in the closet. Gay tourists should be discreet.
Costa Ricans are non-aggressive people and we don't expect that anyone would have problems in the mainstream, however, there are many gay and lesbian friendly hotels and night spots available for those who would feel more comfortable.
